National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam has alleged that attempts are being made once again to establish control over university halls and campuses, warning against the return of violence in educational institutions.
He made the remarks on Tuesday at a discussion titled "From Resistance to Victory: Legacy of July", organised by the National Student Power's Combined Private University Unit at Siraj Convention Centre in Aftabnagar, marking the second anniversary of the July uprising.
Nahid claimed that educational institutions were once again being turned into "safe havens for violence," alleging renewed efforts to seize control of residential halls and dominate campuses.
Referring to recent incidents, he alleged that student representatives at Jagannath University and leaders of the National Student Power had come under attack. He also claimed that attempts were being made to assert control over Dhaka College, Dhaka Alia Madrasa and several other educational institutions.
Calling on the government to learn from the past, Nahid urged authorities to avoid confrontation with students and ensure a democratic environment on campuses.
"Let students continue their education without disruption. Preserve democratic practices in educational institutions and create employment opportunities," he said.
Highlighting the role of private university students during the July uprising, Nahid said their participation had been instrumental in sustaining the movement. He added that the contributions and sacrifices of private university students deserved formal recognition and documentation, alleging that the government had not taken sufficient initiatives in that regard.
The programme was also attended by NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Political Council member Ali Ahsan Junaid, Joint Member Secretary Rafe Salman Rifat, National Student Power President Zahid Ahsan, General Secretary Abu Bakar Majumder and leaders from various private universities.
