Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has urged the party's members of parliament to maintain high ethical standards, organisational discipline and responsible conduct while carrying out their duties.
He made the remarks during a three-hour meeting with the party's elected and reserved-seat lawmakers at Al-Falah Auditorium adjacent to Jamaat's central office in Moghbazar, Dhaka, on Monday.
According to party sources, the meeting focused on providing clear guidance on the responsibilities, conduct and organisational discipline expected from the party's parliamentarians.
During the discussion, Shafiqur Rahman stressed that all MPs must follow the party's constitution, ideals and moral values. He said no lawmaker would receive special treatment because of their parliamentary position and that everyone would be held to the same ethical standards. He also advised MPs to stay away from financial or other forms of inducement and to act responsibly both inside and outside parliament.
The meeting also discussed media coverage and social media scrutiny surrounding Jamaat leaders. Participants observed that allegations against Jamaat leaders often receive greater public attention than similar accusations involving leaders of the ruling party. In light of this, the Jamaat chief instructed MPs to exercise maximum caution in their personal conduct, financial dealings and organisational activities to preserve public confidence in the party.
Shafiqur Rahman also directed lawmakers to submit detailed information about their personal assistants, drivers and other close aides to the party's central office. He advised MPs not to make statements in parliament, the media or party programmes without adequate information.
The meeting further emphasised improving lawmakers' knowledge of parliamentary procedures, legislative work and public policy issues. MPs were also encouraged to maintain regular contact with constituents and raise public concerns in parliament.
A member of Jamaat's central executive council who attended the meeting said special emphasis was placed on strengthening communication between lawmakers and the public while enhancing parliamentary performance to better meet public expectations.
