The National Citizens' Party (NCP) has expressed deep concern and intense indignation regarding a press conference addressed by ousted Prime Minister and president of the now-banned Awami League, Sheikh Hasina, in India.
To outline the party's official stance on Sheikh Hasina's media briefing in New Delhi, the NCP hosted a press conference on Thursday (August 6) evening at its temporary central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka.
The media briefing was attended by NCP Spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, while the written statement was delivered by Alauddin Mohammad, Joint Member Secretary and In-charge of the International Relations Cell of the NCP.
Reading from the statement, Alauddin Mohammad remarked, "We, the National Citizens' Party, observe with profound concern and utter frustration that on a historic day marking the second anniversary of the July Mass Uprising, Sheikh Hasina—a convicted fugitive sentenced to death by a sovereign Bangladeshi court—along with her associates, was provided a public platform to speak in the Indian capital, New Delhi. Through this incident, New Delhi has once again laid bare its Bangladesh policy, proving that it aligns itself not with Bangladesh or its people, but rather views its ties through the lens of its puppet, the Awami League."
He further asserted, "Sheikh Hasina stands convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh. By granting someone—whom the people of Bangladesh hold responsible for genocide and drove out of power through collective resistance—an opportunity to disseminate falsehoods, confusion, and hatred on a glorious day of national commemoration, New Delhi has demonstrated utter disrespect and arrogance toward the Bangladeshi people's pursuit of justice, democratic aspirations, and national dignity."
The NCP stated that any policy or decision surrounding Sheikh Hasina must prioritize justice, transparency, and utmost respect for the sentiment of the Bangladeshi populace. "We strongly condemn this irresponsible action by the Indian government. In the interest of mutual respect, trust, and fostering healthy bilateral relations, we demand the swift extradition of Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh under the existing bilateral extradition treaty. We urge you not to harbor or champion a group rejected and banned by the Bangladeshi public, thereby driving our people toward permanent hostility. At the same time, we demand accountability from the Government of Bangladesh for its failure to execute effective, visible, and fruitful measures to bring Sheikh Hasina back to enforce the court's verdict," the statement highlighted.
"The people of Bangladesh expect a credible, coordinated, and institutionally robust framework that clearly reflects the state's commitment to justice and the rule of law. This issue cannot be relegated to mere political rhetoric or diplomatic formalities; it demands firm political will, proactive steps, and clear institutional accountability," he added.
Reaffirming the party's firm posture, Alauddin Mohammad stated, "Our position is crystal clear: we stand for democracy, accountability, and the total eradication of all forms of fascist politics. We oppose the exploitation of Sheikh Hasina as a bargaining chip in any bilateral political equation, and we firmly reject any compromise or arrangement that threatens Bangladesh's sovereignty, judicial integrity, or democratic future."
He concluded, "As a political entity committed to rebuilding a democratic state, the NCP believes that a permanent end to the fascist system must be guaranteed through essential constitutional, institutional, and political reforms. Concurrently, no individual or organization responsible for violating state sovereignty or committing grave offenses against the public should be permitted to re-enter politics without undergoing proper judicial accountability and trial."
