Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Shafiqur Rahman has cautioned that no one should lose direction due to the arrogance of power, noting that political positions can change at any time.
He made the remarks on Sunday at an event titled “July Mass Uprising—Justice, Meritocracy and the Future of Bangladesh,” held at the Shaheed Abu Sayeed Convention Centre in Eskaton, Dhaka. The programme was organised by the National Doctors Forum (NDF).
Rahman said those currently in government or opposition roles may not hold the same positions in the future and could even lose representation in parliament. He also claimed that a ruling party had previously lost power due to misconduct, and its opposition counterpart no longer exists in a meaningful way.
Referring to individuals accused of serious crimes, he said they often flee to avoid consequences but occasionally signal a possible return. Mentioning former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he questioned the consistency of her statements and actions.
He also criticised India’s role, saying that despite claiming to be a close ally of Bangladesh, it has provided shelter to an accused leader and allowed her to speak at an international forum, which he described as a breach of diplomatic norms.
Rahman stressed the importance of building a merit-based society and called for an end to political favoritism across institutions.
Describing fascism as a “virus,” he warned that anyone exposed to it could adopt authoritarian tendencies. He added that actions deemed wrong or violent when committed by others should be judged the same way when done by one’s own side.
Other speakers at the event included Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar and Dhaka South Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul.
