According to multiple high-ranking party sources, BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has selected Party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the nominee for the presidency, making him the central figure in the party's election preparations. The electoral schedule announced by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A. M. M. Nasir Uddin sets the 23rd presidential election for August 20, utilizing a special session of the National Parliament following the resignation of former President Mohammed Shahabuddin. Voting will take place inside the Parliament chamber from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on the designated date.
The prospective elevation of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir to the presidency has concurrently triggered internal discussions regarding the succession to the Secretary General position. Party insiders indicate that Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed have emerged as the primary contenders under consideration to assume the party's administrative leadership should the office become vacant.
