Nationalist Student Party (Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal - JCD) Central President Rakibul Islam Rakib has hinted at his impending departure from the top leadership role, remarking that the "greatest chapter of my life is coming to a close in an atmosphere of immense respect, honor, and cordiality."
Rakib shared these reflections in an extensive post on his verified Facebook account around 1:00 AM on Thursday night (August 13), immediately following a high-level meeting with BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The interaction took place at Tarique Rahman's political office in Gulshan, Dhaka, where the top five central leaders of Chhatra Dal met the party head in what sources described as a formal farewell meeting. Party insiders have indicated that a newly restructured central committee for Chhatra Dal could be officially announced at any moment.
Expressing deep gratitude to Almighty Allah at the beginning of his statement, Rakib thanked BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman and the late former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia for entrusting him with responsibilities across the Dhaka University unit and the Central Executive Committee over the years. He also conveyed his sincere appreciation to outgoing BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Student Affairs Secretary Rakibul Islam Bakul, senior party leaders, and former central leadership of Chhatra Dal.
"Proud Till My Dying Breath"
Rakib extended his heartfelt gratitude to the leadership across key university units, including Dhaka University, Jagannath University, Jahangirnagar University, Rajshahi University, Chittagong University, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Bangladesh Agricultural University, as well as various medical colleges, specialized agricultural institutions, the prominent five government colleges in Dhaka, and four metropolitan units. He asserted that the dedicated support of these grassroots and campus leaders enabled the central leadership to navigate complex political challenges effectively. Rakib stated that he would remain "proud till my dying breath" of his colleagues across the central committee and university chapters, emphasizing that none of them became embroiled in negative controversies or damaging headlines, leading their respective units with steadfast integrity despite severe financial constraints.
Prioritizing General Students and Positive Campus Politics
Reflecting on his tenure, Rakib emphasized his persistent efforts to foster constructive, student-centric politics across educational institutions. He underscored that he remained exceptionally vigilant to ensure that general students were never subjected to harassment or unwanted situations due to Chhatra Dal activities. He noted that whenever non-partisan general students approached him with grievances or campus-related issues, he made sincere efforts to resolve them from his position. Rakib also expressed appreciation to the leadership of allied fraternal student organizations who stood united during anti-fascist movements.
Reflections on the July Mass Uprising and Post-August 5 Challenges
Highlighting the major achievements of the Rakib-Nasir committee, he underscored their role during the July Mass Uprising, wherein Chhatra Dal coordinated closely with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on street demonstrations and strategic programs. He recalled that following August 5, 2024, the student leadership had to actively manage and resolve hundreds of aggressive campus mobs across diverse institutions while steering the organization forward despite facing persistent cyberbullying and online misinformation campaigns. The current central committee of Chhatra Dal was constituted on March 1, 2024, with Rakibul Islam Rakib as President and Nasir Uddin Nasir as General Secretary.
"Looking to Start a New Life"
Signaling the finality of his leadership term, Rakib expressed his intention to transition into a new chapter of personal life, dedicated to self-refinement, empathy, and service with honesty. Acknowledging that no leader is beyond imperfection during prolonged tenures, he sought forgiveness from anyone who might have felt hurt by his actions or words. In conclusion, Rakib conveyed his optimistic expectation that everyone would warmly embrace and cooperate with the incoming central leadership committee of Chhatra Dal. Discussions regarding the reconstitution of Chhatra Dal's central body have been underway for months following the expiry of the incumbent term, and Thursday night's farewell meeting coupled with Rakib's emotional message strongly indicates an imminent leadership transition.
