Dr. Tasnim Jara
Physician and young political activist Dr. Tasnim Jara shared personal reflections on Bangladesh’s 23rd President, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, reflecting on his long political journey, personal integrity, and philosophical principles following his formal swearing-in ceremony.
In a detailed post published on her verified Facebook page, Dr. Tasnim Jara observed, "From today, he no longer belongs to his political party; he belongs to Bangladesh." She expressed confidence that his tenure would restore institutional dignity, esteem, and constitutional stability to the presidency.
Recalling her initial political engagement in the 2018 general election, Dr. Jara shared how she was inspired to cast her first vote after watching a video appeal by Mirza Fakhrul urging youth participation. Despite witnessing irregularities at her polling center in Dhaka's Khilgaon, she noted that Mirza Fakhrul secured victory in his constituency but chose to forgo taking his parliamentary seat on principled grounds following allegations of electoral malpractice.
"Not everyone has the fortitude to push away the seat of power solely on matters of principle," Dr. Jara remarked, highlighting his moral conviction. She pointed out that despite repeated imprisonments and state pressures under the previous regime, authorities were unable to substantiate corruption allegations against him, underscoring his reputation for financial probity.
Reflecting on personal interactions, Dr. Jara described how Mirza Fakhrul guided her by recommending books, gifting literary works, and candidly sharing life lessons, noting how rare it is within the political landscape for senior figures to engage youth through reading and intellectual discourse.
Touching on the historic significance of the presidency during delicate transitions of power, Dr. Jara emphasized that the head of state plays a crucial role during national crises and voiced optimism for the institution's future.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir took the oath of office as the 23rd President of Bangladesh at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban. Acting Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal administered the oath. The state ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, his spouse Dr. Zubaida Rahman, former interim government Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, Leader of the Opposition Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, cabinet members, parliamentarians, diplomats, and distinguished dignitaries. Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani conducted the proceedings.
Earlier in the day, Mirza Fakhrul paid homage at the graves of BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. The swearing-in followed a presidential election where BNP nominee Mirza Fakhrul contested against 11-party alliance candidate Col. (Retd.) Oli Ahmad.
