Ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
Ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina held an in-person meeting in New Delhi on Friday night with 21 central leaders of the Bangladesh Awami League—whose political operations remain banned inside Bangladesh—as confirmed in a post on the party's verified Facebook page.
The meeting commenced around 9:00 PM at a three-story, cream-colored residential building in the Indian capital, where participants arrived separately in different vehicles. Alongside physical attendees, several members of the central executive committee and secretarial body joined virtually from various foreign locations. The gathering also included prospective figures not currently holding central positions but considered potential inductees into future leadership tiers, according to multiple party executive council sources.
The conclave took place against the backdrop of Hasina's continued residency in India since August 5, 2024, when her administration was toppled in a student-led mass uprising and she fled the country alongside her sister, Sheikh Rehana.
Party insiders revealed that primary discussions focused on organizational restructuring ahead of Hasina’s announced intentions to return to Bangladesh in December to face ongoing legal proceedings alongside other senior leaders in domestic courts.
A central talking point involved the formal entry of Hasina's daughter, Saima Wazed Putul, into active party politics following her recent resignation as the Regional Director for the World Health Organization's (WHO) South-East Asia Region. Deliberations considered inducting Putul into senior leadership tiers, alongside prospective appointments of two additional regional leaders from Chattogram and Barishal divisions into the Awami League's central presidium.
