Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer ATM Azharul Islam
Retired Major Akhtaruzzaman is not a leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, but merely a primary member, claimed the party's central Nayeb-e-Ameer and Rangpur-2 lawmaker ATM Azharul Islam, alleging that portraying him as a "leader" is a deliberate bid to mislead the public.
Addressing a press briefing at the Rangpur Metropolitan Jamaat office on Saturday afternoon (October 3), Azhar made the remarks while discussing the recent arrest of the former military officer and ex-parliamentarian. The briefing was held under the banner of the Divisional Development Forum in the presence of 14 Jamaat-elected Members of Parliament from Rangpur Division.
Clarifying Akhtaruzzaman's status within the organizational hierarchy, Azhar explained: "He is not a Jamaat leader. He is an associate or primary member. In Jamaat, one must first become a primary member, then an activist (kormi), then a full member (rukon/shodoshsho), before rising to leadership. Akhtaruzzaman is merely a simple member."
Azhar condemned the arrest, asserting that Akhtaruzzaman was targeted solely for protesting mismanagement and passenger harassment at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. Criticizing the current administration, he alleged that rather than resolving systemic administrative failures, the government is following the path of the Awami League by weaponizing the legal system to suppress opposition voices.
Thirteen other Jamaat lawmakers from Rangpur Division attended the briefing, including Abdus Sattar (Nilphamari-1), Al Faruk Abdul Latif (Nilphamari-2), Obaidullah Salafi (Nilphamari-3), Abdul Muttaqim (Nilphamari-4), Raihan Shirazi (Rangpur-1), Mahbubur রহমান Belal (Rangpur-3), Golam Rabbani (Rangpur-5), Anwarul Islam (Kurigram-1), Mostafizur Rahman (Kurigram-4), Majedur Rahman (Gaibandha-1), Abdul Karim (Gaibandha-2), Abul Kawser Mohammad Nazrul Islam (Gaibandha-3), and Abdul Waresh (Gaibandha-5), alongside senior regional party leaders.
