National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary was attacked by a hostile mob and had his vehicle vandalised while visiting the historic shrine of Fakir Lalon Shah at Chheuriya in Kushtia's Kumarkhali upazila on Sunday (October 4) evening. Police officers and local witnesses confirmed that the assault occurred abruptly around 7:20pm right at the main entrance gate to the shrine complex. Patwary had arrived at the cultural heritage site on a personal visit without prior security coordination with district law enforcement agencies. Rapidly deployed police units intervened to secure the politician inside the compound and averted further physical injury.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that Patwary entered the shrine premises around 6:00pm accompanied by several associates and spent over an hour touring the mausoleum grounds and cultural exhibits. Trouble erupted when he attempted to exit the inner courtyard toward his parked vehicle outside the boundary wall. A group of aggressive youths gathered at the gates, began chanting derogatory slogans, and suddenly unleashed a barrage of eggs, brick chips, and heavy cobblestones targeting Patwary directly. Several projectiles struck his vehicle, shattering the rear windscreen and denting the bodywork as bystanders scrambled for safety.
Confirming the violent incident, Kushtia Superintendent of Police Md Aminul Islam noted that the NCP leader had arrived in the district unannounced on personal business. The district police chief explained that patrol units were immediately dispatched to the shrine upon receiving distress calls regarding the gathering mob. Responding officers formed a cordon around the shrine gate, dispersed the rowdy crowd, and shielded Patwary and his companions inside the administrative building. Kumarkhali Police Station personnel maintained a defensive line at the perimeter for nearly an hour until sufficient tactical reinforcements arrived.
Kumarkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jamal Uddin stated that a group of unidentified individuals orchestrated the unprovoked attack at the shrine threshold. The police chief noted that investigators are reviewing mobile phone recordings and questioning local shopkeepers to establish the identities and political affiliations of the attackers. After the immediate perimeter was secured by armed constables around 8:15pm, police safely escorted Patwary out of the shrine complex and accompanied his damaged motorcade onto the regional highway. The NCP leader departed Kushtia under security escort directly heading toward Dhaka without addressing assembled journalists.
Speaking to reporters regarding the security intervention, Kushtia Superintendent of Police Md Aminul Islam stated, "He came to Kushtia on a personal visit without informing local police. Furthermore, As soon as we heard of the disturbance, our forces intervened promptly to ensure his complete physical safety." Kumarkhali police confirmed that no formal written complaint had been lodged by the victim's delegation as of late Sunday night. Station officers affirmed that intelligence teams are reviewing local surveillance footage to identify the culprits and prosecute property destruction under existing public order laws. Political observers in Kushtia condemned the assault, noting that cultural heritage sites must remain peaceful sanctuaries insulated from partisan tensions.
