Jamaat Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr. Shafiqur Rahman
The current government is treading the same path as the ousted Awami League regime through irregularities, corruption, and politicization across the judiciary and education sectors, warned Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman. He stated that if this continues, the administration will face a fate similar to the Sheikh Hasina government, remarking that power appears to have simply shifted from one looter to another.
He made the observations as the chief guest at the 2026 Rukn (member) Conference organized by the Gazipur Metropolitan Jamaat at the Shaheed Abdul Malek Auditorium in Tongi on Friday morning (October 16).
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman stated that fundamental civic rights remain unestablished, cautioning that denying referendums and failing to implement the July Charter could trigger dire consequences. He noted that corruption, administrative irregularities, and injustice have surged, pointing out that while a certain party had pledged that elections alone would resolve all national crises, problems on the ground have in fact doubled.
Reflecting on post-2024 mass uprising aspirations, the Jamaat chief recalled that the youth and his party envisioned an exploitation-free, discrimination-free, and just Bangladesh. Instead, he claimed, the current regime is adding new layers of disparity through campus politicization, institutional plunder, and extortion from development works.
Urging party ranks to mobilize full strength for the upcoming local government elections, he criticized the ruling BNP for appointing handpicked loyalists to run local government bodies. He alleged this has created a dual governance structure—one national government reflecting voters' mandates and another at the local level running purely on BNP favoritism. He added that such handpicked syndicates have turned local bodies and major public corporations into hubs of systemic looting.
