BNP Assistant Secretary and reserved seat Member of Parliament Nilufar Chowdhury Moni
Former State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain is young, lacks political experience, and entered politics through a "quota for dependents," remarked BNP Assistant Secretary and reserved-seat Member of Parliament Nilufar Chowdhury Moni. She also characterized Ishraque’s recent armed anti-drug operation in the capital's Gendaria area as an inexperienced and whimsical decision.
Speaking on a talk show broadcast by a private television channel on Tuesday (October 20), Moni stated that while possessing a licensed firearm for personal security is legally justified, brandishing it publicly during an anti-drug operation was inappropriate for a lawmaker and state minister. Emphasizing that intimidating ordinary citizens is not the role of a minister, she observed that Ishraque's lack of seasoning is apparent because he entered politics leveraging the stature of his father, the late Dhaka mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka.
Moni expressed concern that Ishraque may have been incited into taking such a theatrical, film-style step by ill-intentioned advisers or conspirators. She asserted that rather than brandishing firearms before street-level drug addicts, authorities should mount coordinated operations targeting core drug cartels and supply syndicates. However, she welcomed the recent series of resignations by ministers and lawmakers, describing BNP's stance as an exemplary precedent for a positive political culture.
Hinting at broader political maneuvering, Moni noted that Ishraque remains a prominent figure in Dhaka politics whose primary ambition was the city corporation. She dismissed the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) sympathetic posture as crocodile tears, alleging that Ishraque was deliberately pushed into this controversy to force BNP onto the defensive ahead of upcoming elections. She also lamented that despite narcotics becoming the nation's foremost crisis, a permanent solution remains elusive due to covert collusion by corrupt bureaucrats and administrative officials.
