NCP leader Akhtar Hossain speaks at press conference
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has accused the ruling BNP of completely failing to honor its pre- and post-election pledges to implement the July National Charter, alleging the party has carried out an outright deception against the nation.
Marking the first anniversary of the signing of the charter on Saturday (October 17), NCP leaders held a press conference organized by their Reform Implementation Committee at the party’s central office in Bangla Motor, Dhaka. Speaking at the briefing, NCP Member Secretary and Member of Parliament Akhtar Hossain announced that the NCP will boycott the government’s Constitutional Amendment Committee and placed two demands: immediate implementation of the referendum verdict, and the dissolution of the "unilateral" amendment committee in favor of a Constitutional Reform Council formed in line with the referendum.
Hossain pointed out that the July Charter was signed on October 17, 2025, by political parties following nine months of dialogues led by the then Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s National Consensus Commission. While BNP initially endorsed it as a document of political consensus and promised implementation with its notes of dissent, the ruling party has scrapped core reforms where it had raised no dissent—including the establishment of an independent Supreme Court Secretariat, the judicial appointment act, and the Police Commission. Furthermore, Hossain stated that BNP violated commitments to distribute parliamentary standing committee chairmanships proportionally among opposition parties, citing boycotts of their amendment committee as an excuse.
NCP Joint Convener Sarwar Tushar criticized the existing amendment body as an instrument built to serve individual ambitions. He alleged that while BNP invokes July rhetorically, it preserves the autocratic structures of the Awami League era to manipulate upcoming electoral processes. NCP political board member Salehuddin Sifat, Joint Convener Monira Sharmin, and Joint Member Secretary Faridul Haque were also present.
