The first budget of the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will be presented today, Thursday (11 June).
Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury will present the national budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year in Parliament at 3:00pm.
In the past, there was only one exception when the 2025–26 budget was presented on a Monday. However, as usual, this year’s budget is also being presented on a Thursday. Since the 1972–73 fiscal year after independence, almost all national budgets in the country have been presented on Thursdays. This is why many people wonder why budgets are almost always announced on this day.
Regarding this, former NBR Chairman Dr Abdul Majid said that officials involved in budget preparation and presentation have to work extremely hard. Therefore, if the budget is presented on a Thursday, they get the next two days—Friday and Saturday—as holidays. This also allows time to analyze and review the budget during these two days.
He further said there may be other reasons as well. After the budget is announced on a Thursday, the following two days are public holidays, so it becomes difficult for anyone to take immediate legal action during this period.
At the same time, it also prevents people from quickly purchasing and stockpiling goods or engaging in customs evasion before measures are implemented.
Abdul Majid also noted that the supplementary budget is usually passed in the following week. Members of Parliament need time to properly study and understand different aspects of the budget, and presenting it on a Thursday gives them an additional two days for preparation.
The total outlay of the budget is likely to be set at Tk9.38 lakh crore, the largest national budget in the country’s history.
It is known that the budget size for the 2026–27 fiscal year is likely to be set at Tk9.38 lakh crore, the largest national budget in the country’s history.
According to Finance Division officials, the budget is being prepared under the broad theme of “Economic Democratization and Deregulation: Bangladesh’s Journey Towards a Trillion-Dollar Economy,”.
The budget is set to place strong emphasis on human resource development aligning with its “Bangladesh First” vision. The budget prioritizes education, health, employment, social protection, and entrepreneurship to build long-term economic capacity and foster a modern, knowledge-based, and inclusive economy.
