The broiler chicken price jumped sharply in the capital's kitchen markets, increasing by Tk30 per kilogram over the past week.
Broiler chicken is now selling at Tk190 per kg, adding to consumers' concerns as prices of most fish varieties also remain high.
A visit to several markets across Dhaka on Friday (3 July) found that broiler chicken is being sold between Tk180 and Tk190 per kg, while Sonali chicken is priced at around Tk340 per kg.
Despite the rise in poultry prices, the markets for eggs and beef have remained relatively stable. Beef continues to sell at Tk800 per kg, while eggs are available at previous rates.
Egg trader Mohammad Masum said egg prices have eased slightly compared to last week. A dozen white broiler eggs are now selling for around Tk100, while brown eggs are priced at Tk120 per dozen. Last week, eggs were selling for Tk125–130 per dozen.
Chicken trader Mohammad Sohel attributed the increase in broiler prices to lower market supply.
"The price of broiler chicken depends on supply. When supply is high, prices fall. Today, supply is lower, so prices have gone up. Compared to last week, broiler prices have increased by Tk20 to Tk30 per kilogram," he said.
Consumers, however, continue to face pressure on their household budgets as the prices of poultry and most fish remain elevated despite some relief in the egg market.
