Around 259 bhori of gold jewellery has been stolen from two jewellery stores at Shah Ali Shopping Complex in Mirpur, Dhaka. Following the incident, five security guards assigned to the market have gone missing, while police say preliminary findings suggest their possible involvement.
According to Darus Salam Police Station, the theft took place at around 5:56 am on Sunday at Al Razzak Jewellers and A Hossain Jewellers, located on the second floor of the shopping complex. The stores are owned by Md Jasim Uddin and Abul Hossain, respectively.
Officer-in-Charge Md Dulal Hossain said an initial assessment indicates that about 200 bhori of gold jewellery was stolen from Al Razzak Jewellers and around 59 bhori from A Hossain Jewellers.
Describing the incident as a well-planned theft, the OC said preliminary investigations suggest that members of the market's security team were involved, along with three to four unidentified individuals.
Police said the shopping complex had its own security personnel, while the jewellery stores also employed a separate security guard. Initial findings indicate that the guard was allegedly fed sweets laced with a sedative, causing him to lose consciousness.
Investigators said CCTV footage appears to show several market security guards participating in the theft. The investigation, however, is still ongoing.
A case has been filed with Darus Salam Police Station. As of 10:30 pm on Sunday, no arrests had been made and none of the stolen jewellery had been recovered.
