The country’s gas supply situation has improved as the transfer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from a cargo to a floating terminal resumed in Cox’s Bazar’s Maheshkhali, amid an improvement in weather conditions.
LNG transfer operations were disrupted on Thursday due to inclement weather, reducing gas supplies. The operations resumed on Friday morning as weather conditions improved, increasing gas supplies from imported LNG.
According to Petrobangla’s daily gas supply data, total gas supply stood at 2,525 million cubic feet (mmcfd) at 2pm on Friday. Of the total, 1,607 mmcfd came from domestic sources and 918 mmcfd from imported LNG.
The total supply had fallen to 2,301 mmcfd at 6pm on Thursday, with 1,615 mmcfd coming from domestic sources and 686 mmcfd from LNG.
Thus, LNG-based gas supply increased by 232 mmcfd in a day.
Officials said LNG transfer from an imported cargo to Summit’s floating terminal in Maheshkhali was disrupted due to inclement weather, forcing the terminal to suspend operations and reducing overall gas supplies.
Gas supply fell to around 2,200 mmcfd on Thursday night, creating shortages in various sectors.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Petrobangla said LNG transfer from the cargo to the floating terminal would resume as weather conditions improved, after which gas supplies would gradually return to normal.
The reduced LNG supply had put temporary pressure on gas supplies to power plants, industries and other sectors. With LNG supply increasing on Friday, the situation has started to improve, officials said.
In a statement issued on Friday, Petrobangla said gas supply had started returning to normal as LNG transfer from a cargo to the floating terminal in Maheshkhali resumed.
