Japanese automotive giant Toyota has unveiled plans to establish an automobile manufacturing facility in Bangladesh to assemble conventional vehicles alongside Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), targeting construction commencement inside an economic zone in 2027 and full commercial production by 2029.
A high-level delegation from Toyota Tsusho Corporation outlined the roadmap during a courtesy meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat on Tuesday (October 6), Deputy Press Secretary Shahadat Hossain confirmed.
Led by Toyota Tsusho Corporation Vice Chairman Ichiro Kashitani, the delegation stated that local production aims to drive industrial growth, generate employment, facilitate technology transfer, and train local technical personnel. The company is also expanding its sales and service network across all administrative divisions to improve consumer access to Toyota vehicles and servicing.
Welcoming the investment blueprint, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman reaffirmed his administration's commitment to maintaining a stable, competitive, and investor-friendly climate backed by necessary policy and infrastructural support. The prime minister also urged Toyota Tsusho to explore investments in renewable energy and waste-to-energy generation, assuring complete state cooperation. The delegation pledged support for technical and vocational training to build an industry-ready workforce among Bangladeshi youth.
The meeting was attended by Commerce Minister Khondokar Abdul Muktadir, Prime Minister’s Finance and Planning Affairs Adviser Dr. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir, Science and Technology Affairs Adviser Rehan Asif Asad, and Special Assistant for Asia-Pacific Overseas Employment Md. Shakirul Islam Khan. Toyota’s side included Toyota Tsusho Corporation Mobility Division CEO Shigeru Harada, Toyota Bangladesh Limited President Premmit Singh, and senior executives.
