The submission deadline for the investigation report into the 2016 Bangladesh Bank reserve heist has been deferred for the 99th time after the investigating agency failed to place its findings before the court.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam fixed November 25 as the new deadline on Monday (October 19), following a prayer from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police citing the need for additional time to finalize the inquiry, confirmed Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Prosecution Sub-Inspector Roknuzzaman.
On February 5, 2016, cyber criminals stole $81 million from Bangladesh Bank’s account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York through fabricated payment orders. Investigators suspect international cyber syndicates orchestrated the digital theft in collusion with local facilitators. Following the heist, Jubair Bin Huda, then deputy director of the central bank's accounts and budgeting department, lodged a case against unidentified suspects under the Money Laundering Prevention Act at Motijheel Police Station on March 15, 2016. The case was transferred to the CID the following day, which has since led the protracted investigation.
